What is Clinical Psychology?

A Clinical Psychologist applies psychological theory and research in order to reduce mental distress.

The high level of psychological training is unique amongst mental health professionals in the breadth and depth of psychological knowledge and skills that are acquired. This allows each intervention to be tailored to each client by drawing upon a range of psychological theories and therapeutic approaches. The result of this formulation-led approach is an integrative intervention tailored to each client and his or her unique difficulties.

This can be particularly beneficial for those people whose distress is multi-faceted, and does not easily fit into a discrete diagnostic category, or where difficulties are longstanding and have not been amendable to standardised approaches.
